What I LOVED at Art Dubai 2009

Well, Art Dubai 2009 is well and truly over and I wish it wasn’t! The week was full of exceptional art, enchanting performances, and lots of interesting people and experiences along the way. I won’t be forgetting it any time soon.

In between my commitments as an Art Dubai and START intern I had the chance to run around the gallery halls a few times during the week and have a few favorites, including Ming Yue Wang’s Two Young Women, 2007, from Galerie Tomas – which according to this article was bought up by a member of Dubai’s ruling family for about $60,000:

But what I really, truly loved and what stood out to me most among the sea of artworks was Ahmed Alsoudani’s work.  His paintings depicted surrealistic and macabre shapes in stunning, vibrant matt colors – eerie subject matter when you realize some of the forms are actually dislocated bodies -  yet really beautiful as a whole. When you get past the unsettling aspects of it and really focus on the overall composition and execution of his work, the fact that the subject is war doesn’t really detract from the sheer genuine beauty in front of you. Reminds me of Goya, albeit less gruesome! I will definitely be watching out for what he does next. I have a strong feeling he will be making it big… in the following article he was described as being the ‘next Picasso’. I totally agree. It’s doubtful that I would hang one of his more unsettling pieces in my living room, but I would definitely invest in his work.

“How to approach a gallery as a young Artist” ,by Robert Goff ;the Owner and Art Director of Goff and Rosenthal Gallery in Newyork.

As I was having an informal conversation with Robert Goff, I asked whether he was getting annoyed by artists wanting to exhibit in his gallery. He said he gets 20 emails a week; from different artists, I asked him what is the professional way to do it, and here are the steps to do that.

First you start with a small gallery, and find one that exhibits the same style as yours.

Then call them and ask if they accept submissions, because some galleries don’t.

If they do, arrange some pictures of your work and include your statement.

I'm off with a good start, a car accident!!!

The minute I arrived with a 100% excitement, and bang I wreck my car across one entire side, which leaves me with zero enthusiasm. Yes, true story.

Speaking of which, I might have created an art piece without any drop of sweat. Spotted Almine Rech French Gallery displays a painting with a story that I could relate to, hence my creative car mishap.

Long story short, the making of the art piece was basically using a motorcycle to create the red marks on the painting. Now that must sound odd, lets hope the artist was wearing a helmet at that time!!!

Fayez - the new security guy

On the very first day of his job Fayez was interrogatedf by two curious interns.

So did you see any celebrities , who's the most interesting person around ?

Fayez: No i'v been working for only 9 hours on my first day , i dont know what is happening here , or who's here and who's not.

what is your job exactly ,what do you ? Why are you checking people's bags, do people carry guns and explosive devices ?

Fayez : "hahaha"

For how many hours do you stand on yout feet ?

Fayez: 12 hours

Do you get trained on standing like that ? Do you do your daily streching ?

Fayez :' laughing ' Not really , it is a tiring job.

So Fayez , am sure you get secret information , why did they empty the halls and let people stand outside for an hour , while dogs where sniffing artworks ?

Fayez : now am going to be canceled and fired , you better leave haha ..

Interview with Horrach Moya

 

As we were roaming around checking out galleries, we came across a nice guy from the Horrach Moya Gallery. Juan Horrach Moya is the Art director of a Spain-based gallery, http://www.horrachmoya.com/.

 

 

Q: Compare this year's art fair to last years, what are some of the differences?

 

A: This year's organization is much better, for example the lunch, they provided food for us and they constantly ask if we need any help, but in terms of the content of the art fair, I think they both have similar qualities.

 

Q: Describe one of your favorite artists in the fair?

 

A: Lida Abdul. Her concepts are socio-political but also of a poetic nature. I can relate to her work in many ways, its similar to my own style. http://www.lidaabdul.com/

 

Q: Are you an artist yourself?

 

A: No, but to be an artist is a form of living life. I am a lover of life and I try to enjoy it.

 

 

 

Q: Have you showcased any work by Arab artists in your gallery?

 

A: I have no experience with Arab artists because I haven’t been exposed to them. I would love to know about artists from this region of the world. It is interesting to see how their artworks are so different from what I usually see, coming from a different background, it is the surrounding of the artist that shapes his artwork.

 

 

Q: what do u think of young artists? Do u showcase their work?

 

A: When you don’t see the work of a young artist, you are dying. We always have to open our eyes for the future. I think we live in a contemporary world were we need to see new things.

 

 

Q: So how would you conclude this interview?

 

A: Thank you Dubai for providing us with this opportunity, creating an artistic platform were we can expose ourselves to middle easterners.
